How Can I Get A Cheap, Fast, And Final Divorce?

My office has been representing all types of people in Texas courts for almost 30 years. I filed my first divorce in San Antonio, Texas in 1988.  The woman wanting a divorce called me the day I opened my office in San Antonio, Texas and asked me how much a divorce would cost her.  She told me that she had no children with her husband but that she had been married 7 years so they had accumulated a bunch of junk was probably not worth fighting over.   I did not know what to tell her for the first few minutes I was with her on the phone.   Eventually, I told her the attorney’s fees would be $50 and that she would have to pay for the filing fees.   At first, she thought it was too much.   However, since I had spent over 15 minutes discussing her case with her,  she believed I was worthy of her $50.00.

Since my first divorce case, my office still gets calls every day from everyday people who never conceived that the word “divorce” would be uttered by them or their spouse. Unfortunately, in today’s climate, we expect things to happen quickly including dissolving a marriage. We have lost the ability to be patient and try to work through our problems in a civil and considerate way. And thus, lawyers come into our lives even though most of us do not like lawyers.   Lawyers are similar to policemen…you don’t like them until you need them to handle your problems.

Most people are shocked that their spouse has even considered filing for a divorce. Even worse is when a person is unexpectedly served with divorce papers. In a split second, all love…all civility…all caring…goes out the window. Your marriage turns into a living hell where the only objective is to hurt the other person more than they will hurt you.

If a divorce will be part of your future, don’t lose sight of your life. There is life after a divorce. There is life during a pending divorce. You must maintain a sense of respect and dignity. Communication is the key. Don’t stop the channel of communication between you and your spouse. What you don’t know will scare you more than what you know. I will tell you that most of our divorce cases will cost you more than the original $50 I charged for my first divorce.   But,  you will be retaining a divorce attorney that has represented tens of thousands of people and that will not be surprised by anything you tell him.

You will get past any crisis in your life. Keep in mind that if the “situation does not destroy you…it will only make you a stronger person in the future”. With the right attitude and maybe with the right attorney, you will succeed in enjoying life again.
